The home is two-stories, and built of red brick laid in Flemish bond, capped with a slate hipped roof with exposed rafters. In the 1860s, the company built several dams along the Farmington River to produce hydroelectric power to run its factory. Towards the top of the tower you can spot some gargoyles, a nice detail many people miss. Some of the old buildings along the river have since been demolished, others left vacant. This is a century-old hospital that used to treat TB patients back in the olden days, right in the heart of Newington. With no way to move forward, they settled in the remote woodlands of Connecticut. Its rare to come across an abandoned site of this magnitude. Once a bustling seaside amusement park, this stretch of beach was abandoned after a fire in 1997 burned the only bridge leading to the beach between Bridgeport and Stratford. It entertained the people of East Haddam for more than 90 years, but it lies wholly abandoned now. The docks just north of the wreck are accessible and make for a great place to snap some shots. Another of the handful of original structures extant on the Seaside Sanatorium campus in Waterford, Connecticut, is this gorgeous Tudor Revival style duplex constructed for medical staff housing. This abandoned prison makes for a fun experience for any urban explorer or tourist. The Collins Company factory opened in 1826 by Samuel W. and David C. Collins, with the purchase of an old gristmill and a few acres of land along the Farmington River in Canton. The building has been vacant since the late 1980s and has been eyed for redevelopment into loft and artist studios since. According to Assessing information, the home is owned by the next door neighbor and they do not appear to have the means or desire to restore the clearly significant home back to its former glory. When the facility opened, children would spend as much time as possible exposed to the suns rays as part of their treatment here. The rail line was subsequently abandoned, and the nearby tracks were taken up in 1940. Pleasure Beach was an amusement park and group of homes that attracted people from all over the country in the late 1800s. By 1905 Pleasure Beach had several roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, a funhouse, and a movie theater shown above. So, they came up with the plan to move their house over the river to the other side in winter when the lake will freeze over. Oh too see these buildings restored one day. The duplex residences feature a symmetrical facade with two main entranceways, located in slightly projecting pavilions, and are set within basket-arched openings, detailed with alternating brick and granite voussoirs. When they returned, however, the ice had broken and they found their house sinking. The Newington Railroad Depot was built in 1873 at the narrowest point at the Piscataqua River as part of the Portsmouth and Dover Railroad. The home is two-stories, and built of red brick laid in Flemish bond, capped with a slate hipped roof with exposed rafters. This is a century-old hospital that used to treat TB patients back in the olden days, right in the heart of Newington. With no way to move forward, they settled in the remote woodlands of Connecticut. Its rare to come across an abandoned site of this magnitude. Once a bustling seaside amusement park, this stretch of beach was abandoned after a fire in 1997 burned the only bridge leading to the beach between Bridgeport and Stratford. It entertained the people of East Haddam for more than 90 years, but it lies wholly abandoned now. The docks just north of the wreck are accessible and make for a great place to snap some shots. Another of the handful of original structures extant on the Seaside Sanatorium campus in Waterford, Connecticut, is this gorgeous Tudor Revival style duplex constructed for medical staff housing. When I went there, it was fun to try and find all the small structures left behind in the woods.
