Raypak, 20 weeks. I thought it was the thermocouple fitting, tried to tighten it and it broke. Haywards troubleshooting process relies a lot on flashing error codes, but they arent much help when either of the boards is out. Possible leak in the heat exchanger which would explain the "smoke" he saw in the back when the symptoms first began. Have you had it serviced this year? Have you checked the circuit feeding the heater to make sure it is providing the proper voltage? Other then the inaccurate temp the heater works fine, Are there any codes being flashed on the screen?

I don't have the tools to check for gas leaks (other than soapy water) or much less, check for pressure. I believe now it may be my thermostat. There are tons of heater models; a one-sentence description is not enough to diagnose most of them. Entry/Exit to detached garage, enough space for door location? Maybe that air bubble worked it's way (about 100 feet) to the heater and started the (3 strikes and you're out - wait 60 minutes for a reset) mode. I said "we'll see if that has any affect."

The switch to the heater is on. Are you sure you have the heater wired and plumbed in correctly?

Heater is one year old. If you are having trouble lighting the pilot, there are several things to consider. That would help go a long way in finding the solution. Does it not work on especially warm or cold days? I blew out the manifold with compressed air without removing the valve as it appeared to be tightly glued to the manifold.
I don't have the tools to check for gas leaks (other than soapy water) or much less, check for pressure. I believe now it may be my thermostat. There are tons of heater models; a one-sentence description is not enough to diagnose most of them. Entry/Exit to detached garage, enough space for door location? Maybe that air bubble worked it's way (about 100 feet) to the heater and started the (3 strikes and you're out - wait 60 minutes for a reset) mode. I said "we'll see if that has any affect."

This weekend, when I finally had time to work on it, I see there is no power to the display at all: no service light, no heater light, no light or display of any kind. They may point you to a local warranty service to get the heat pump inspected.
Water has always been in tip top shape. Too bad about your piano experience. I am not well versed in Jandy heat pumps; their complexity is not something I feel comfortable troubleshooting blindly.
