I can confirm this! You are more likely to ding and then pretzel the thin factory driveshaft than have a u-joint fail. As others have noted, the original 2WD U-joints were the non-greaseable kind. I have a 2017 TRD Off-road and when I checked the torque on the driveshaft bolts (they were correct at 65 ft. lbs) I was flabbergasted that Toyota in order to save a few dollars chose u-joints with no way to lubricate without pressing them out and lubing the races. They even took it to the nth degree by using a solid pole and hitting a specially made pocket in the road to try to get results and had no luck. The issue that has me wanting to replace the U-joints is that the rear U-joint is squeaking when I reverse - it may also squeak a few times when I go forward after reversing. Question re: U-joints and driveshaft removal, Driveshaft? If I have other issues after that I'll drop the $450 he wanted for a new one. Was that $450 for a new custom made one or for a Toyota one? I have seen a truck on the freeway lose a u-joint on the front of the driveshaft and the truck pole vaulted, flipped over and killed the passenger. They never come back the same.
