He rescued a wounded man under fire, and later showed great coolness when placing his men close up to the enemy's line under heavy fire. James Riley was born in Crosshill, Ayrshire & lived in Prestwick, Ayrshire. His RAF service records state he served with the 10th battalion of the Middlesex Regiment.Whilst the medal roll for the TFWM states he served with the 8th battalion. The recipient was awarded his medal in 1905 & was one of 18 recipients of the Militia long service medal to this regiment out of a total issue of 1587 medals to the British Army between 1904 & 1930
